Library Addition: Gnome Press Anthology The Robot and the Man

Friday, September 17th, 2021

Another book from that bulk purchase I’m cataloging:

  • Greenberg, Martin. The Robot and the Man. Gnome Press, 1953. First edition hardback, a Very Good+ copy with top of spine very slight concave, edges of head and heel slightly soft, and a 2″ crack starting to bottom front inner hinge, in a Very Good dust jacket with shallow chipping at head and heel, some edgewear along front bottom and at top near fold, slight, faint spotting along rear fold edge, and a crease running down the entire front cover right next to the flap fold, as though the book were folded not quite on center and corrected much later, plus a few other touches of wear. Still, the white portions of the jacket are reasonably bright and the pages lack the horrific browning that plagues later Gnome titles. Reprint anthology of robot stories, including some from Henry Kuttner and C. L. Moore (not a Gallagher story), Lester del Rey (two stories), A. E. van Vogt, John D. MacDonald, and Bernard Wolfe. Chalker/Owings, page 200. Kemp, The Anthem Series, 225-26.

  • Library Additions: Two Gnome Press Firsts

    Tuesday, August 28th, 2018

Two Gnome Press firsts I bought in separate eBay auctions.

  • Greenberg, Martin, editor. Coming Attractions. Gnome Press, 1957. First edition hardback, a Near Fine- copy with two 1/4″ tears at head, dusty top and bottom page blocks and the usual age-darkening to pages for Gnome Press books of this era, in a Very Good dust jacket with shallow 1/8″ deep by 1″ wide chip at top rear cover, tears and shallow chipping at head, slight loss at top points, and slight spine fading (on the plus side, the white portions of the dust jacket are much brighter and free of dust staining than usually found). Anthology of speculative non-fiction about the future. Chalker/Owings (1991), page 203. Kemp, Gnome Press #64, page 258. Bought for $9.98 off eBay.

  • Shiras, William. Children of the Atom. Gnome Press, 1953. First edition hardback, a Fine- copy with slight dust soiling to top page block, in a Near Fine- dust jacket with, alas, small ink “x”s next to 13 titles on the back cover, as well as slight dust staining to white rear cover and wear along points and edges; save that one flaw, an extremely nice, bright example of the dust jacket. Chalker/Owings (1991), page 200. Kemp, Gnome Press #28, page 215. Locke, A Spectrum of fantasy [One], page 197. Bought off eBay for $44.99.

  • Library Addition: Two Gnome Press Anthologies

    Monday, February 8th, 2016

I picked up two nice Gnome Press anthologies from a National Book Auction at quite a reasonable price.

  • Greenberg, Martin. Journey to Infinity. Gnome Press, 1951. First edition hardback, a Fine- copy with a tiny bit of bend at head in a Fine- second state (30 titles) dust jacket with a few small traces of wear, and a few pinhead spots on the front cover, otherwise extremely bright and attractive. Chalker/Owings (1991), pages 198-199. Kemp, 204. Bought for $25 with buyer premium.

  • Greenberg, Martin. All About the Future. Gnome Press, 1954. First edition hardback, a Fine- copy with slight dust soiling to page block edges and one small indention to very bottom of from board, in a near Fine- dust jacket with a 1″ closed triangular tear at bottom front along spine, a semi-closed 1/8 tear at head, and shallow chipping at points. Chalker/Owings (1991), page 202. Kemp, 204. Note that Kemp calls for black boards with red lettering; my copy is gray boards with a reddish cloth spine with silver lettering, and Chalker/Owings doesn’t report on the binding state at all, which would make this a previously unrecorded binding variant. (Edited to add: Some fellow collectors believe that this is in fact the primary binding state, and that Kemp got it wrong and the black boards/red lettering state is the variant.) Bought for $20 with buyer premium.
