  • Blaylock, James P. The Magic Spectacles. Morrigan Publications, 1991. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, with a full page inscription to SF writer Scott Cupp and his wife Sandy: “For Scott & Sandi,/This loony children’s book, starring/my sons at what now seems to/me to be an impossibly young/age. Here’s to Italian food &/trips to California. Cheers,/Jim.” Replaces an unsigned copy.

  • Davidson, Avram, editor. The Best From Fantasy and Science Fiction Fourteenth Series. Doubleday, 1965. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Near Fine- dust jacket with a 1/16″ chip at head, slight edgewear a heel, and some darkening/dust soiling to white rear cover. Currey, page 131.
  • Effinger, George Alec. The Exile Kiss. Doubleday Foundation, 1991. First edition hardback, a Fine- copy with a wrinkle at heel in a Fine- dist jacket with just a trace of darkening to the very tops of the white flaps. Inscribed by Effinger: “To Ed —/With supreme best wishes/(Which I haven’t bestowed even/on Willie or Fred) —/At Armadillocon 13 —/George.” I strongly suspect this book was inscribed to Ed Graham, who was the chair of Armadillocon 12. (His wife, Casey Hamilton, chaired Armadillocon 13, and together they chaired Armadillocon 16.) Willie Siros and Fred Duarte were other Armadillocon chairs. Replaces an unsigned trade first in my library, and supplements a copy of the signed/limited state.

  • Ellison, Harlan. Partners in Wonder. Walker, 1971. First edition hardback, a Near Fine+ copy with a light, dime-sized black smudge along rear spine-join, in a Near Fine- dust jacket with two quarter-sized light charcoal colored stains on the spine panel, and slight edgewear at head and heel. Inscribed by Ellison: “For Mila,/Merry Christmas/1977/Harlan Ellison.” Collection of collaborative stories. Supplements a nicer copy signed by Robert Silverberg (but not Ellison). Fingerprints on the Sky, page 56. Currey, page 178.

  • Moorcock, Michael. Legends From The End of Time. Harper & Row, 1976. First edition hardback, a Fine- copy with bumping at head and heel in a Near Fine+ dust jacket with slight wear at head and heel, slight age darkening to white rear panel, and slight dust soiling to same. Inscribed by Moorcock: “To Bob,/With all good wishes/from Michael M.” Tanelorn Archives, page 24, a. Precedes the W. H. Allen edition (which I also have).

  • Morrow, James. The Continent of Lies. Holt, Reinhardt and Winston, 1984. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, inscribed by Morrow: “For Scott/This book of/dreams & desires…/best wishes,/James Morrow.” Pretty sure this is another former Scott Cupp copy. Edited to add: Scott has now confirmed that it was his.

  • (Heinlein, Robert A.) Patterson, William H., Jr. Robert A. Heinlein In Dialogue With His Century — Volume 2: The Man Who Learned Better | 1948—1988. The second half of Patterson’s mammoth biography. Bought at Half Price Books for $17.49.
  • Moorcock, Michael. The White Wolf’s Son. Warner Aspect, 2005. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Elric/von Beck novel. Bought at Half Price Books for $7.98.

  • Bass, T. J. The Godwhale. Eyre Methuen, 1974. First hardback edition (the Ballantine PBO precedes) and first UK edition, a Fine copy save some very sight age darkening to pages, in a Fine dust jacket. Sequel to Half Past Human and a Nebula Award finalist. Currey, page 25.

  • Moorcock, Michael. The Hollow Lands. Harper & Row, 1974. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Near Fine, price-clipped dust jacket. Signed twice by Moorcock, on the half title and title pages. Second volume of the Dancers at the End of Time trilogy. Tanelorn Archives, page 21. Currey, page 370.
  • Pohl, Frederick, Martin Harry Greenberg and Joseph Olander, editors. Worlds of if: A Retrospective Anthology. Bluejay Books, 1986. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Reprint collection of stories that originally appeared in If magazine. Includes Zelazny’s “This Mortal Mountain.” A couple of points of interest: First, all the stories whose authors were still alive provided short, original “Memoirs” to their stories, including ones from Zelazny, Lafferty, Ellison, etc., and I believe the vast majority of these have never been reprinted anywhere else. Second, this book came out from Bluejay Books in September of 1986, which means it was among the very last block of books published before their implosion, along with Rob Swigart’s Vector and Vernor Vinge’s Marooned in Realtime.
  • Zelazny, Roger. Eye of Cat. Timescape, 1982. First edition proof, a Fine copy. Thought I had bought another Eye of Cat proof from Bob in an earlier purchase, but no. Timescape was another imprint that ceased business in the 1980s.

  • Zelazny, Roger. Unicorn Variations. Timescape, 1983. First edition hardback, a Near Fine copy with the Simon & Schuster “walking man” remainder mark at heel in a Fine- dust jacket with a trace of soiling to the white jacket. I thought I had a signed first, but not, I have a signed book club, and a Fine unsigned first, but not a signed first.

    Here are all the library additions I picked up over the second half of last year. Sorry it starts with a repeat from yesterday, but that’s the way the alphabet crumbles…

  • Aldiss, Brian W. Juniper. No publisher listed, 1985. First edition poster-sized broadsheet, #13 of 300 copies signed by Aldiss and designer Patrick Eddington, a Fine copy. Not in Reginald. Not in the Locus database. Not (yet) in ISFDB. (This edition predates the earliest listing for “Juniper” by a year.) Bought for $36 plus a hefty $30 in shipping at auction.

  • Banks, Iain. Canal Dreams. Macmillian (UK), 1989. First edition hardback, a Fine- copy with a few pinpricks of light staining at head and a small wrinkle at top center to the first few pages, in a Fine dust jacket. Inscribed to late central texas SF writer Carrie Richardson: “Yo, Carrie!/This one’s for you./Iain Banks/10 March 90/at Wiscon 14.” Supplements an unsigned copy. Bought for $15.00.
  • Banks, Iain. Espedair Street. Macmillian (UK), 1987. First edition hardback, a Fine- copy one light pinprick stain at head and slight ear at heel, in a Fine dust jacket. Inscribed to Richardson: “To Carrie!/Weird regards/Iain Banks/10 March 90/at Wiscon 14.” Supplements an unsigned copy. Bought for $15.00.
  • Banks, Iain. The State of the Art. Mark V. Ziesing, 1989. First edition hardback, a Fine- with a few pinpricks of light staining at head, in a Fine dust jacket. Inscribed to Richardson: “To Carrie!/best wishes from am on the/GS GCU Arbitrary/Iain M. Banks/10 March 90/at Wiscon 14.” Interesting that he puts the middle “M” on the signatures for the SF books as well. Supplements an unsigned copy. Bought for $10.

  • Bradbury, Ray. Fever Dream. St. Martin’s, 1987. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, signed and dated by Bradbury (6/12/88). Children’s book version of the Bradbury story. Part of the “Night Light” series of books, which have glow-in-the-dark elements. Like the glow-in-the-dark signed/limited edition of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline (which I also have), the glow is super-duper faint. Bought for $20.
  • Bradbury, Ray. Marionettes, Inc. Subterranean Press, 2009. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, inscribed to “Sunny” and signed by Bradbury. As his eyesight worsened near the end of his life, Ray’s signature became larger and more sprawling, as you can see below. Bought for $34.99 off eBay. Replaces an unsigned copy.

  • Bradbury, Ray. The Other Foot. Perfection Form Company, 1982. First edition chapbook (presumed; no additional printings listed), a Fine copy, signed by Bradbury. As with The Veldt, this is a short story reader with questions for classrooms and reading comprehension questions in the back. Not in The Undead, which includes a number of other Bradbury chapbooks. Bought off eBay for $35.

  • Bradbury, Ray. Ray Bradbury on Stage: A Chrestomathy of His Plays. Primus/Donald I Fine, no date listed (but 1981). First edition trade paperback original, a Near Fine+ copy with slight bumping at head, a slight, small crease near front bottom corner, a bit of dust soiling at heel, and a touch of edgewear at points. Signed by Bradbury. Combines the contents of three other play collections, The Anthem Sprinters and Other Antics, The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit And Other Plays (which I also have in signed first edition), and Pillar of Fire and Other Plays. Bought for $20 off eBay.
  • Burgess, Anthony. A Clockwork Orange. Heinemann, 1962. First edition hardback, an Ex-Library copy with interior pocket removed, rear inner flap previously taped to rear inside cover, with tape stains there and to rear free endpaper, in a Near Fine, first state (16s, flaps untrimmed) dust jacket, with tape stains to rear flap, with a crease across bottom of front flap and a few specks of dirt to front flap, otherwise a very well-protected example of the first state dust jacket; call it a Very Good/Near Fine Ex-Lib copy. Signed by Burgess. A keystone work, and basis of the Stanley Kubrick film. Signed firsts of famous books made into famous films are among the most desirable first editions across a wide range of collectors. This edition also includes the final chapter, where Alex “groweth up” and contemplates leaving behind his antisocial ways for marriage and a family, omitted from most subsequent editions. Bought off a noted UK SF dealer for £600, making it among the most expensive single volumes I’ve ever purchased, but I’ve never seen a signed copy in a first state dust jacket list for under a grand before.

First edition hardback thus (an omnibus edition of Dawn, Adulthoode Rights, and Imago), a Fine- copy with slight bumping at head and heel, in a Fine- dust jacket with a trace of edgewear. Inscribed by Butler: “To Carrie/Good reading/Octavia E. Butler.” Supplements signed copies of the three individual first editions. Bought for $25.

Bought at Half Price Books (who sell new books now as well), with two store stickers (including publisher’s gold “Signed First Edition” sticker) for 20% off cover price. Irritatingly, both this limited edition and the trade edition below have the same ISBN.

  • Hill, Joe. Full Throttle. HarperCollins, 2019. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, trade edition, signed by Hill. Note that the dust wrapper on both this and the limited above have a new type of material with a distinct texture (almost like a paper version of suede). Bought from a noted mystery bookseller for 20% off.
  • Hill, Joe and Gabriel Rodriguez. Locke & Key 4: Keys to the Kingdom. Subterranean/IDW, 2019. First limited edition hardback, #159 of 250 signed/numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine slipcase, new and unread. The latest collected signed/limited volume of the acclaimed dark fantasy/horror graphic novel series. The IDW edition came out many years back, but as with the other Subterranean volumes, this includes additional material, including the full comic scripts. Bought from the publisher with a dealer discount.

  • Kilworth, Garry. House of Tribes. Bantam Press (UK), 1995. Uncorrected proof, trade paperback format, of the hardback first edition, a Fine- copy with a bump at heel in a Near Fine dust jacket which is slight taller than the proof, hence the bend at the top. Fantasy about mice. Also has a personalized review letter from Bantam laid in upon which Michael Moorcock has written “Mouse shit.”
  • Koontz, Dean R. Beastchild. Charnel House, 1992. First hardback edition, #612 of 750 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy, sans dust jacket, as issued, in a Very Good only slipcase with a couple of quarter-sized dampstains to back. Reprint of a 1970 PBO, dedicated to Lisa Tuttle (among three others). Bought off eBay for $65.00.

  • Krahulik, Mike, and Jerry Holkins. The Splendid Magic of Penny Arcade: The 11 1/2 Anniversary Edition. Del Rey, 2010. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Retrospective “behind the scenes” collection of the gaming webcomic, which I somehow missed when it came out.

  • Lansdale, Joe R. The Big Book of Hap and Leonard. Short, Scary Tales Publications, 2019. First edition hardback, #101 of 400 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Collection of Hap and Leonard stories. Includes everything in the Tachyon Hap and Leonard trade paperback, plus several additional pieces. I’ve also laid the three SST stickers affixed to the tissue paper wrapping the book ships with, because that’s just the sort of hairball I am. Contains Mike Mignola art not in the Millennium edition.

Inscribed to me by Moorcock: “To Lawrence/Very best.” Omnibus edition of Count Brass, The Champion of Garathorm and The Quest for Tanelorn. There were earlier UK hardback editions from Granada (as The Chronicles of Count Brass) and Millennium; the White Wolf edition contains new artwork by Walter Simonsen and a map by Jim Cawthorn not in any previous editions. Eternal Champion Volume 15. I think this was the last Moorcock book White Wolf did, and after 2000 they went back to concentrating strictly on gaming-related books.

Reprint of the Millennium volume, but I can’t find a content listing for the Millennium volume anywhere online to see if the contents differ, though at least the introduction is new to this volume.

First edition hardback thus, an Italian omnibus edition of the first six Elric novels, a Fine copy, sans dust jacket, as issued. Inscribed to me by Moorcock: “To Lawrence/Prego!/Michael Moorcock.” A beautifully printed book, with decorated boards, full-color, full page plates by a variety of artists. A thrown-in by Mike, who had just received a big box of them. “See those behind you? Go ahead and take one if you want…”

First edition hardback, a Fine- copy with slight bumping at head and heel in a Near Fine- dust jacket with a 3/8″ chip at heel/front join, shallow chipping at head and heel, and touches of edgewear. First edition hardback thus, an omnibus edition containing The Eternal Champion, Phoenix in Obsidian, and The Dragon in the Sword, a Fine- copy in a Fine dust jacket, inscribed to my by Moorcock: “To Lawrence,/All best.” Yoshitaka Amano cover. Millennium Eternal Champion series Volume 2. Precedes the White Wolf edition by a couple of years.
  • Moorcock, Michael. Hawkmoon. White Wolfe, 1995. First White Wolf hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with just a trace of bend at head and some blind-side black dye transfer to just the inner creases of the flap folds. Inscribed to me by Moorcock: “To Lawrence,/All very best,/Michael Moorcock.” There were two early editions, as The History of the Runestaff in the 1970s and a Millennium edition of the same name, but this edition contains material not in either of those, including a new Moorcock introduction and new art and maps by James Cawthorn.

Contains “In Another Country,” “The Way to Spook City,” “They Hide, We Seek” and “This is the Road.” Five Star is a small press that seems to deal mostly with the library market, and I know that SF/F dealers who have tried to obtain their books have generally found their wholesale terms unreasonable. Bought for $24 off the Internet. I have an unsigned copy of this title for sale in my latest book catalog.

But many of these volumes include material not in any other edition, and both the Millennium and White Wolf omnibus editions have gotten harder to find as of late.

First U.S. hardback edition thus, being an omnibus edition of The Bull and The Spear, The Oak and the Ram, and The Sword and the Stallion, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Inscribed to me by Moorcock. “Michael Moorcock/To Lawrence/All best!” Previously published in an omnibus edition as The Swords Trilogy by Gregg Press (which I also have a signed first of). Contains Mike Mignola art not in the Millennium edition.

There were earlier UK hardback editions from Granada (as The Chronicles of Count Brass) and Millennium; the White Wolf edition contains new artwork by Walter Simonsen and a map by Jim Cawthorn not in any previous editions. Eternal Champion Volume 15. I think this was the last Moorcock book White Wolf did, and after 2000 they went back to concentrating strictly on gaming-related books.

First edition hardback, a PC copy of 500 signed, numbered copies signed by the contributors (to which Moorcock has added “Michael Moorcock’s copy” to the limitation plate), a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with a trace of wear at top points. Supplements another copy. Anthology series (partly original, partially reprints) that only had two volumes. Gevers would later take up co-editing duties for Postscripts.
  • Burroughs, William S. The Ticket That Exploded. Grove Press, 1967. First hardback edition (preceded by an Olympia Press paperback edition), a Very Good+ copy with bumping at head and heel, slight wear to boards at heel, and a race of dust soiling, in a Very Good- dust jacket with 1″ closed tear at top front, 1/8″ semiclosed tear at bottom front near point, slight bumping at points, slight dust soiling, and general wear (it had dark staining along the spine, but a damp cloth cleaned that up nicely); I suspect that the orange text on the dust jacket was originally red, but since it applies to the inner flap as well, and almost all the copies I see online are similarly affected, I’m assuming it’s more the chemical composition of the ink than sun-fading per se. Shoaf, Collecting William S. Burroughs in Print, 6a, which states that it has textual revisions from the Olympia Press edition.
  • Di Filippo, Paul. Joe’s Liver. Cambrian Publications, 2000. First edition hardback, of presentation copy of 300 signed/numbered hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Inscribed by the author to the Moorcock’s: “To Michael/&/Linda —/America — It’s one/big laff/fest!” Replaces another copy.
  • Holdstock, Robert. Celtira. Simon & Schuster UK, 1998. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, with Moorcock’s ownership bookplate affixed to the inside front cover.
  • Holt, Tom. Flying Dutch. Orbit, 1991. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket.
  • Moore, Alan. Voice of the Fire. Top Shelf Productions, 2003. First hardback edition (preceded by a Gollancz TPO), #68 of 500 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with just a trace of edgewear. It seems that the only difference between this and the trade edition (currently unrecorded in the ISFDB) is the full-color signature plate page.
  • Robinson, Kim Stanley. Remaking History. Tor, 1991. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Inscribed to Moorcock: “for Michael Moorcock/with great admiration/from a raw/2μg rain trance./KS Robinson/1993.” At least I think that’s what the last line before his signature says. (At the 1992 Armadillocon, Stan told the story of driving through west Texas, dropping acid, and writing all his really deep thoughts down in a notebook, only to read it the next day and find such pearls of wisdom as “Bugs are weird.”)

  • Wilson, Colin. The Angry Years: The Rise and Fall of the Angry Young Men. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with slight bumping at head and a nailhead-sized nick near the heel. Non-fiction biography and criticism of the “angry young men” of literature in the 1950s and 60s. Laid in is a largely negative review of the book from Roger Lewis.
  • Wilson, Colin. Dreaming to Some Purpose. Century, 2004. First edition hardback, a Fine- copy, with uneven sunning to side and bottom page blocks, in a Fine dust jacket. Autobiography.

    Back in November, I went out to Michael Moorcock’s house and bought five boxes of books from him. Some of those went out in December’s Lame Excuse Books catalog, and more were Moorcock first editions (naturally) that I’ll be cataloging a bit later. But here’s one of the most notable books by other authors I bought from him:

    Clarke, Arthur C. Rendezvous With Rama. Gollancz, 1973. First edition hardback (no statement of printing, as per Currey), a Near Fine copy with bumped top front corner, small inked “W” on front free endpaper, tiny doggear to top of first 12 pages, in a Near Fine dust jacket with bumped top front corner, 3/8″ closed tear to rear bottom DJ near heel, pinhead nick to bottom front fold edge with associated scratch, slight edegwear at head and heel, and a touch of rubbing. Hugo and Nebula winner for Best Novel. Currey, page 115. Anatomy of Wonder 4, *4-109. Magill, Survey of Science Fiction Literature, pages 1759-1763 (“Rendezvous With Rama is one of those novels obviously destined to become instant classics.”). Reginald, Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature, page 106. One of Clarke’s most important novels. Replaces an Ex-Library first.
