William Shatner on the Mike Douglas Show

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

The first segment has Shatner talking about difficult acting jobs he had to perform on Star Trek. The second features him singing. Guess which one I watched all the way through?

William Shatner Would Like You To Avoid Setting Yourself on Fire

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

William Shatner gets some corporate money to tell yourself not to set yourself on fire while frying a turkey:

Warning: Just as the fryer is filled with too much oil, the video is filled with too much Shatner. Way, way, way too much.

For those with low Shatner thresholds, the advice is:

  • Don’t overfill the pot with oil.
  • Turn off the flame when lowering the turkey into the oil.
  • Always fry your turkey away from your house.
  • Properly thaw the turkey before cooking.
  • Use a grease-approved fire extinguisher.
  • If you’re going to fry a turkey, this is pretty sound advice. And if you live in central Texas, you probably shouldn’t be frying a turkey at all this year with the drought restrictions.

But Wait! There’s MORE Shatner News!

In addition to Emmy-Award winning actor, singer, director, and international man of general awesomeness, add “Shakespearean Actor” to William Shatner’s already formidable resume. He’ll be doing a reading of The Merry Wives of Windsor along with Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hanks, Martin Short, Eric Idle, and Christina Applegate.

It’s a benefit for the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles to be held May 9 at 8 PM at Royce Hall at UCLA. If I lived in the LA area, I think this would easily be worth $95 of my own dollars to attend…

    Shatner Update: Shatner Sings Again!

    Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

You may have noticed that I’m a fan of William Shatner. I’m not so much of a fan of his music (or his direction; William Shatner still owes me $3.50 for Star Trek V); in fact, putting on a copy of The Transformed Man is a good way to clear out a room after a party. But Shatner being Shatner, that hasn’t stopped him, and he’s now putting out a new album.

    A few notes:

He can’t sing, but Shatner has pretty good taste in music. Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and Peter Shilling’s “Major Tom,” “Iron Man,” tasty tracks one and all.

He also has lined up some pretty big names to help him out. Check out this list:

  • Peter Frampton
  • Steve Howe
  • Bootsy Collins
  • Alan Parsons
  • Johnny Winter
  • Patrick Moraz of Yes
  • Edgar Froese from Tangerine Dream
  • Dave Davies from The Kinks
  • Toots of Toots and the Maytals
  • John Wetton (of King Crimson, UK, and Asia)
  • Carmine Appice
  • Steve Hillage
  • Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourn’s guitarist)
  • Half of Deep Purple
  • That’s not a lineup of sidemen, that’s the roster of a major benefit concert.

    This is pretty much obligatory:

Not Going to the Austin Comic Con

    Thursday, November 11th, 2010

As I’m going to be busy watching Skyline (another movie Howard and I are reviewing) and they didn’t have any literary SF guests, I won’t be going to The Austin Comic Con (though I have friends who are going). But they do seem to have rounded up a surprisingly large number of 70s TV stars (plus Chewbacca, Darth Maul, Billy Dee Williams and, err, the cast of The Film I Refuse to Name). (And I’ve already met Lee Majors, for certain values of “met” that include “have your hand touched briefly as you walk past in a line with 10,000 other kids and their parents at a Toys”R”Us opening in the 1970s.” Also “met” William Shatner that way. I wonder when Toys”R”Us stopped hiring TV celebrities for store openings?)

But I must admit I’m a little bit tempted to go just to meet Oscar Goldman.

Oh, and here’s a hint for the Austin Comic Con Webmaster: if you’re going to copy text out of a Wikipedia entry, it’s usually best to take out the “[citation needed]” bit…

Behold, the weirdness of Cyriak! You’ve probably seen a few of these before in various corners of the web.

And I double-dog dare you to make the “Wall of Shatner” your animated desktop background…
