Library Additions: Dan Robertson’s The Ideal, Genuine Man inscribed by Stephen King

Monday, December 2nd, 2013

While it’s gotten much harder to find undiscovered gems in used bookstores thanks to the Internet, there are still bargains to be had if you know what you’re looking for.

Take, for example, this:

Robertson, Dan. The Ideal, Genuine Man. Philtrum Press, 1987. Second Printing of the first edition hardback (numberline starting with 2 and “Distributed by the Putnam Group” on the copyright page), a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with a slight indention and 1/16″ closed tear along spine. Signed by Robertson and inscribed by introduction author Stephen King: “1/29/88” then further down: “To Lady Pat and/Sir Barr/all best,/Stephen King”//.

Ideal Genuine

Ideal Genuine Sig

Friends tell me that King used to regularly attend SCA events on the east coast (which is where his cameo in Knightriders came from), and the inscription suggests that this might have been inscribed to someone King knew in that context.

Philtrum Press, of course, is Stephen King’s own press, and he did initially tour with Robertson (a writer King long admired) to promote the book. So I always check copies when I come across them. This one I found at the Half Price Books on outer Westheimer in Houston for $18, minus roughly 25% off thanks to a coupon for the day after Thanksgiving.

This is, I think, the 6th book signed Stephen King book in my library, but the first I’ve found cheap in a used bookstore…

Shoegazer Sunday: Golden Garden’s “Ghostwood”

Sunday, November 24th, 2013

I was in the mood for something mellow, and Golden Garden‘s “Ghostwood” admirably fits the bill, even if the video comes in almost entirely on the cheap side of the “cheap but arty” continuum.

Lead singer Aubrey Rachel Violet Bramble (if in fact that’s a single person’s real name and not a real name + fake name combo) has the most obvious “little girl” voice this side of Alison Shaw of Cranes.

The Day of the Dead Memes

Friday, November 1st, 2013

Here, on the Day of the Dead, it’s time to remember those who were once briefly (if inexplicably) popular, but which have now largely passed from our consciousness.

I’m speaking, of course, of dead memes.

Once they roamed wild and free across the Internet, but now these memes are largely dead in popular culture. Consider this a Whitman’s Sampler of the once-popular memes.

Dead Memes

The Dancing Baby

This computer-generated dancing baby was one of the first Internet memes, so popular it evidently showed up on an episode of Single Female Lawyer Ally McBeal. (Kids: Ask your parents what an “Ally McBeal” was.)

Mahir (I Kiss You!!!!)

In the early days of the Internet, people started putting up home pages willy-nilly with only a basic understanding of HTML and little-to-no taste or guiding aesthetics. It was a different era, when Geocities roamed the land.

Into this era stumbled Mahir Cagri, a Turkish man with diverse interests and a shaky grasp of English. “I like music , I have many many musicenstrumans my home I can play. I like sex.”

If you had an email address in 1999, chances are pretty good someone forwarded you Mahir’s page…

Hamster Dance

Basically rows of animated gifs of cartoon hamsters dancing to a silly, sped-up song. There were many offshoots and parody pages as well. I remember an “Objectivist Dance” page with animated dollar signs…

Bert is Evil

A website that claims Sesame Street‘s Bert is an agent of historical calumny, and has the photoshops to prove it.

Briefly flared into worldwide consciousness after 9/11 when radical Muslims incorporated an image of Bert with Osama Bin laden into a street sign supporting the terrorist.

All Your Base

Are belong to us.

Domo-Kun

A Japanese plush mascot chasing a kitten in divine retribution for your Onanistic sins.

Badger Badger Badger

A short animation of badgers, mushrooms, and snakes set to self-referential music, in an infinite loop. The surrealist Internet hit of 2003.

David After the Dentist

Woozy little kid gets filmed after dental surgery. Hilarity ensues.

Boxxy

Teenage girl makes video. 4Chan gets hold of video. Flamewar so epic that 4Chan grinds to halt ensues.

So look on these dead memes, ye mighty lolcats and ponies, and know that one day you too will pass into obscurity…

Shoegazer Sunday: Velveteen’s “Poster Boy”

Sunday, October 20th, 2013

Velveteen is a band from Germany most famous (for certain values of “famous”) for having their album hoaxed as a Death Cab for Cutie album. (Disclaimer: I couldn’t recognize a Death Cab for Cutie song with a gun to my head.) Correction: The band wrote to note they’re the London Velveteen, not the German one. “Poster Boy” is another video whose theme is “War is bad and stuff.” Or alternately, “stock footage from the Vietnam is pretty cheap.”

Maybe You Shouldn’t Read This Post If You’re Depressed

Monday, October 7th, 2013

Ever now and then you come across something interesting, but you wonder “What the hell do I say about this?”

I was looking for some scary gifs when I came across this. There are a few in the, but it seems to be mostly depressing black and white gifs for suicidal teenage girls.

Like this:

Or this:

Interestingly enough, more than half seem to be of stunningly beautiful actresses from popular culture. And, naturally, there’s a lot of Nine Inch Nails references.

And this is pretty striking:

Anyway, if you find yourself making or posting these gifs, maybe you should read this.

Consider this more an act of reportage than commentary…

Guillermo Del Toro Simpsons‘ Couch Gag is Awesome

Saturday, October 5th, 2013

This came out two days ago, and already has over 6 million hits, but I still thought Guillermo Del Toro opening couch gag for The Simpsons forthcoming “Treehouse of Horror” episode was too awesome (and too full of SF/F/H references) not to share.

Hat tip: Hank Wagner’s Facebook feed.

And Now Here’s Something We Hope You’ll Really Like!

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

June Foray, voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel and about a thousand other characters, awarded a lifetime achievement Emmy. And not only was she still around to receive it, at age 95, she’s still working!

To celebrate, here’s a timely instructional video:

Shoegazer Sunday: The Great Wilderness’ “Dark Horse”

Sunday, August 25th, 2013

The Great Wilderness is an all-girl post-punk band from Costa Rica, and “Dark House” has a nice gaze sound to the guitars.

Shoegazer Sunday: Belle and Sebastian’s “Sleep Around the Clock”

Sunday, July 28th, 2013

Here’s another “Is it Shoegaze or not” entry, with Belle and Sebastian’s “Sleep Around the Clock,” which is more bouncy retro low-fi pop, but there’s enough of a shoegaze tinge to it (a little like Black Tambourine) that I’m throwing it in here.

Plus I like the sciency theme of the video. So there.

Missing My Prize Fight Debut

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013

I had a dream the other night where I was late for my boxing debut.

The boxing arena seemed to be on the edge of a large shopping mall, and I had to ask directions to find it. I heard my name announced as the next fighter as I was entering the building, but I couldn’t seem to find my way down to what was presumably the ring (which I never came in sight of). It was less like Spinal Tap being lost backstage than the building being larger, older and more Gothic than I expected. At one point I saw some sort of rickety, extensible cherry picker/dunking stool/extending bridge contraption, which looked like it might deposit me over a wall where I needed to go, but looked too dangerous to try. Also, I noticed I wasn’t wearing shoes, which I was pretty sure was a breach of boxing rules.

I woke up before I ever got to the ring.
