Library Addition: Michael Swanwick’s In Memoriam Gardner Dozois

Monday, April 13th, 2020

Sometimes things just show up in my mailbox:

Swanwick, Michael and Sean Swanwick. In Memoriam: Gardner Dozois 1947-2018. Dragonstairs Press, 2020. First edition chapbook, #60 of 70 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy. Came in the mail with a “with the Compliments of the Press” notice laid in. Originally appeared in the Philcon 2018 program book.

I’ll have copies of this available in the next Lame Excuse Books catalog.

Library Additions: Two Signed Michael Swanwick Chapbook Firsts

Sunday, December 29th, 2019

Two more signed Michael Swanwick Dragonstairs Press first edition chapbooks:

  • Swanwick, Michael. Is There Something About You Irish?. Dragonstairs Press, 2019. First edition chapbook original, #50 of 60 signed, numbered copies, a Fine- copy (with slight phantom crease at top front), new and unread. Short essays on various Irish aspects of Swanwick’s life, done for the Dublin Worldcon.

  • Swanwick, Michael. Northern Lights. Dragonstairs Press, 2019. First edition chapbook original, #4 of 120 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy, new and unread. Three short stories about supernatural Scandinavian creatures.

Note: White lines are in the original, and not a scanner artifact. (Good thing, too, since it’s a brand new scanner!)

  • I still have copies of both these available through Lame Excuse Books.

Library Addition: Signed First of Ray Bradbury’s The Other Foot

    Monday, September 16th, 2019

Picked up another signed Ray Bradbury chapbook:

Bradbury, Ray. The Other Foot. Perfection Form Company, 1982. First edition chapbook (presumed; no additional printings listed), a Fine copy, signed by Bradbury. As with The Veldt, this is a short story reader with questions for classrooms and reading comprehension questions in the back. Not in The Undead, which includes a number of other Bradbury chapbooks. Bought off eBay for $35.

Library Addition: Two States of Michael Swanwick’s Dragonskin

    Tuesday, July 9th, 2019

Another Swanwick Dragonstairs Press chapbook, and I picked up one copy in each state:

  • Swanwick, Michael. Dragonskin. Dragonstairs Press, 2019. First edition chapbook original, letter J of 10 copies bound in python skin, a Fine copy, new and unread. Essays on writers who have written works on dragons: “The Scale-Hunter’s Wayward Son,” “The Mother of Earthsea,” “A Daughter of Pern,” “The Iron Dragon’s Father,” and “Afterword.”

  • Swanwick, Michael. Dragonskin. Dragonstairs Press, 2019. First edition chapbook original, #39 of 50 numbered copies, a Fine copy. (Note: the numbered edition I have states that the lettered edition is in boa constrictor skin rather than python, and it has a more sand-colored look rather than dark green.)
  • I will have copies of each state for sale in the next Lame Excuse Books catalog, probably around November.

    Library Additions: Several Matheson Firsts

    Monday, December 24th, 2018

More from the Camelot Books sale. The trick here is that the title refers to both Richard Matheson and Richard Christian Matheson.

  • Matheson, Richard. Other Kingdoms: Original Draft. Gauntlet Press, 2011. First edition hardback, #75 of 300 signed, numbered copies (though Matheson, ailing at the time, only initialed copies), a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Bought for $20 marked down from $50.
  • Matheson, Richard. Through Channels. Footsteps Press, 1990. First edition chapbook original, #53 of 550 copies, a Fine copy, signed by Matheson, with gray full-page illustration laid in.

  • Matheson, Richard Christian. The Ritual of Illusion. PS Publishing, 2013. First edition hardback, #205 of 250 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy in decorated boards and a Fine dust jacket. Bought for $19.80 marked down from $49.50.

  • The Clark Ashton Smith stuff I’m putting up tomorrow…

Library Additions: Two Signed Peter S. Beagle Books

Two more signed Peter S. Beagle firsts from Tachyon:

  • Beagle, Peter S. The Last Unicorn: The Lost Journey. Tachyon, 2018. First edition hardback, #14 of 250 numbered copies signed by Beagle and illustrator Stephanie Law, a Fine copy in decorated boards, sans dust jacket, as issued. The first, unpublished version of The Last Unicorn.

  • Beagle, Peter S. and Patricia A. McKillip. The Karkadann Triangle. Tachyon, 2018. First edition chapbook original, a Fine copy, signed by Beagle. Two unicorn stories, one by each author.
  • I have copies of each available through Lame Excuse Books, if anyone is interested…

Library Addition: Two Signed Michael Swanwick Chapbooks

    Thursday, November 15th, 2018

    Two more signed Swanwick chapbooks:

  • Swanwick, Michael. The Third Frankenstein. Dragonstairs Press, 2018. First edition chapbook original, #60 of 100 signed copies, a Fine copy. Essay written to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelly’s novel.

  • Swanwick, Michael. small wonders. Dragonstairs Press, 2018. First edition chapbook original, #5 of 120 copies, a Fine copy. Three short-shorts. Though you can’t tell from the scans, this is a much smaller trim size than the above.

  • I will have copies of both of these available for sale in the next Lame Excuse Books catalog, currently in preparation.

Library Additions: Two Robert E. Howard/Gary Gianni Items

    Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018

Here’s two unusual Robert E. Howard-related items I picked up off eBay relatively cheaply. I think both of these were originally freebie giveaways to promote fancy illustrated editions of Howard’s work:

  • (Howard, Robert E.) Gianni, Gary. Robert E. Howard’s Conan of Cimmeria: Drawings & Sketches by Gary Gianni. Wandering Star, no date (but 2003, as per the ISFDB). A Fine copy, signed by Gianni. Bought off eBay for $9.95.

  • Howard, Robert E. (Gianni, Gary, illustrator). Solomon Kane’s Homecoming. Wandering Star, no date (but 1997). A Fine copy, signed by Gianni. Four-page illustrated Howard poem, given away as a promotional item. This was also available in Gianni’s A Solomon Kane Sketchbook, but this 8 1/2″ x 11″ stand-alone item is a larger trim size. Not (yet) in ISFDB, and I only see one other reference to it online. Bought off eBay for $15.50.

  • Library Addition: Signed R.A. Lafferty Chapbook

    Monday, October 22nd, 2018

I picked up a signed R.A. Lafferty chapbook, one of the Drumm chapbooks I already had, but in unsigned form:

Lafferty, R.A. It’s Down the Slippery Cellar Stairs. Chris Drumm, 1984. First edition chapbook original, #76 of 100 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy. Drumm Booklet No. 14. Non-fiction collection. Bought off eBay for $23.95. Obviously I should have bought all these signed Lafferty chapbooks from Drumm back when they were $5 each, but I wasn’t collecting him then…

Library Additions: Two Signed Ray Bradbury Items

    Friday, September 21st, 2018

Two more signed Ray Bradbury items, both bought off eBay from different sellers:

  • Bradbury, Ray. They Have Not Seen The Stars. Stealth Press, 2002. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Signed by Bradbury. Bradbury’s collected poetry. Bought off eBay for $40. Stealth Press was an interesting publishing experiment that probably lost it’s backers a ton of money…

  • (Bradbury, Ray) Kipen, David, Campbell Iriving and Erika Koss. Reader’s Guide: Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. National Endowment for the Arts, 2006. Presumed first edition chapbook (no additional printings stated), a Fine- copy with a couple of specks of edgewear. Inscribed by Bradbury on the cover: “Carol!/Love!/Ray/B.” With a photograph of Bradbury signing books laid in. Non-fiction critical companion. Bought off eBay for $29.99.
