Library Addition: Three Signed K.W. Jeter Books
Thursday, August 4th, 2016Library Addition: Signed copy of The Worlds of Theodore Sturgeon
Wednesday, August 3rd, 2016Another item from the library of Fred Duarte:
Sturgeon, Theodore. The Worlds of Theodore Sturgeon. Ace, 1972 (stated; actually 1977). Paperback original, second printing (cover price of $1.50 rather than 95¢, as per ISFDB), a Fine- copy with traces of wear, slight foxing to inside covers, and a small wrinkle at heel. Signed by Sturgeon.
Library Edition: Signed First Edition of Thomas Disch’s Triplicity
Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016I have a fair amount of Disch, some of it signed, but didn’t have this title until I bought this from the Fred Duarte estate:
Disch, Thomas M. Triplicity (omnibus edition of Echo Round His Bones, The Genocides, and The Puppies of Terra). Nelson Doubleday (SFBC), 1980. First edition hardback thus (as per the ISFDB, i.e. 3816 printed at the bottom on the back flap of the dustjacket and gutter code K10 on page 408), and first hardback edition of The Puppies of Terra), a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with several 1/16″ creases at head and wear at points. Inscribed to Fred and signed thrice by Disch (as was his custom for this title).
Like media tie-ins, omnibus editions are among the last titles I pick up, but this is one I lacked (and I didn’t have any edition of either Echo Round His Bones or The Puppies of Terra).
Library Addition: Signed First Editions of John Varley’s Wizard and Demon
Monday, August 1st, 2016Yet another purchase from Fred Duarte’s library. I already had a nice signed first of Titan, and this supplants lesser copies of Wizard and Demon.
Library Addition: Two Signed Harry Harrison First Editions
Thursday, July 28th, 2016Two more signed first editions from Fred Duarte’s library:
Now I just need to pick up a signed first of West of Eden…
Library Addition: 4 Signed George Alex Effinger Planet of the Apes PBOs
Tuesday, July 26th, 2016I knew George Alec Effinger and had collected most (but not all) of the books before his untimely death in 2002. His four Planet of the Ape books (based on the short-lived live-action CBS TV show) were among the ones I lacked. (Media tie-in works are something I only pick up when they’re incredibly cheap, or when I’ve already picked up everything else.) These four are all from the estate of Fred Duarte.
Library Addition: Signed First of Ray Bradbury’s The Silver Locusts
Monday, July 25th, 2016On Sunday, July 9, I bought a number of books formerly owned by the late Fred Duarte, an Austin area fan who helped out with Armadillocon, the San Antonio Worldcons, etc., and who had amassed a fair number of hypermodern science fiction firsts signed or inscribed to him. Most of what Fred had I already had myself, but I found a few things to pick up.
Here’s the first and most expensive item.
Bradbury, Ray. The Silver Locusts. Rupert Hart Davis, 1951. First UK edition and first hardback edition thus (includes almost all of The Martian Chronicles, dropping “Usher II” and adding “The Fire Balloons”), a Near Fine copy with dust soiling to top edge and a quarter-sized sticker for Foyle’s Bookstore (Charing Cross, London) affixed to bottom inside front cover, in a Very Good dust jacket with a 1/4″ chip at head, a 1″ tear and associated 1/4″ chip to top front cover, shallow chipping at points, foxing to white back cover and along flap edges, and general wear. Inscribed: “Fred!/Ray Bradbury/5/29/1992.” Weist, Jerry. Bradbury: An Illustrated Life, page 51 (where he notes that the cover is by Roy Sanford). Currey, page 56. Reginald, 01765. Tuck (Volume I), pages 62-63. Bought for approximately $320.
