King Kong Burns

Friday, March 10th, 2017

In Vietnam, they had an elaborate premiere for the opening of Kong: Skull Island, with fire dancers and a large mock-up of King Kong.

Pro-tip: Try not to let your fire dancers get too close to your giant flammable King Kong facade.

They didn’t follow that guideline.

(Edited to add: There were originally two videos here, but the first video removed from YouTube, so I deleted that. Skip to about 3:45 into this one to see things start to go wrong.)

Guillermo del Toro Has A Pretty Awesome Prop Collection

Thursday, October 8th, 2015

The New York Times offers up a look at Guillermo del Toro’s collection of horror movie props, which is fairly impressive.

Who else do you know has a lifesize figure of H.P. Lovecraft reading one of his own books?

His library also includes at least one book with one of my stories in it (Horrors: 365 Scary Stories)…

Library Addition: Kirk Hammett’s Too Much Horror Business

Monday, August 17th, 2015

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett is one of the world’s premiere collectors of horror movie posters and memorabilia (toys, games, masks, etc.). After reading about the Hammett collection in Heritage Auction’s Intelligent Collector magazine, I’d been interested in the book documenting it, so I picked one up from the Cold Tonnage 40% off sale.

Hammett, Kirk. Too Much Horror Business. Abrams, 2012. First edition oversized hardback, a Fine- copy with wear at points, sans dust jacket, as issued. (Note: The wear on the front cover lettering is faux-wear, as you can tell from the same faux-wear on the title and half-title page.) Hammett has a truly amazing poster collection, possibly on par with that of Robert V. Borst (documented in Graven Images), whose range of collection included more science fiction and fantasy than Hammett. Bought for £12 marked down from £20.

The Silliest Horror Movie Poster I’ve Seen All Week

Tuesday, October 28th, 2014

Noted without comment…

Yes, there’s a trailer.

Looks like they were aiming for a cross between 80s T&A horror films and direct to SyFy…

Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda

Sunday, June 22nd, 2014

The auteurs of The Asylum are Roger Cormen is at it again. Are you ready for Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda?

Coming August 2nd to (of course) The SyFy Channel.

At this point I’m thinking I ought to file a trademark for my Slothacconda idea…

How To Kill Godzilla

Friday, May 16th, 2014

Via Ace of Spades, comes War is Boring’s primer on how to kill Godzilla.

The basic plan is:

  • Blind it with multiple gunships unloading white phosphorous into its eyes.
  • Hit it with a Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a “30,000-pound, precision-guided bunker-buster…filled with a deadly RDX explosive mix and designed to slice through solid rock.”
  • That would probably work in real life (where the square/cube law pretty much precludes 10-story monsters, much less ones breathing atomic fire). But in the world of the just released Godzilla movie (which, alas, I have not seen yet), given that our fire-breathing friend is reported to have survived Castle Bravo, America’s first dry-fuel thermonuclear bomb test on Bikini Atoll, well, color me skeptical that 30,000 pound JDAMs would do the trick…

For Elvis’ Birthday: The Trailer for Bubba Ho Tep

My Interview With The Writer of Mega Shark Vs. Mecha Shark

    Friday, January 3rd, 2014

Knowing of my keen interest in The Asylum’s work in the shark genre in general, and the forthcoming Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark in specific, SF Signal’s John DeNardo arranged for me to interview the writer of that film, Jose Prendes.

Now the interview has been published. Not only did Prendes write Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark, he also wrote the novel (I kid you not) Sharcano.

For some unfathomable reason, Amazon doesn’t seem to have it for pre-prder yet, but you can find more information from the publisher here. There’s also a Facebook page.

    New Godzilla Trailer

    Tuesday, December 10th, 2013

There’s a new Godzilla trailer out:

    Points:

  • I’m a Godzilla fan from way back in my youth.
  • This is directed by Gareth Edwards, whose Monsters I loved.
  • It has a script by Frank Darabont, AKA “The Only Guy Who Can Make Great Films From Stephen King’s Novels.”
  • Holy shit does Zilla look big.
  • If you need something to fill the time between now and May 2014, may I suggest Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack? Despite the cheesy title, this is actually the best Godzilla film since the original Gojira
  • Mood: Cautious Optimism.

    Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark

    Friday, December 6th, 2013

Thanks to the keen eye of SF Signal’s John DeNardo, we have word that the auteurs at The Asylum or offering their homage to Terror of MechaGodzilla: Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark.

It looks like pretty much everything we’ve come to expect from The Asylum…
