I’m sure you’ve read about Roger Ebert’s death from cancer. I don’t have much to add to the many tributes being offered (though I do want to note that he was a science fiction fan before a movie critic), so instead here’s Ebert and Gene Siskel eviscerating Rob Reiner’s North.

I was an avid Ebert fan long before I learned he was a science fiction fan, although I should have known, given that he was quite appreciative of genre films. I wrote to him a few times (including a defense of Fifties science fiction film following his review of ALIEN TRESPASS), and corresponded with him on his blog, and he was nice enough to reply back. He also let me know that Alain Resnais, of all people, is also a major science fiction fan.
