Library Additions: Five Joe Lansdale Books

Wednesday, June 10th, 2020

Still more books for my complete Joe Lansdale collection, including three recently published books that I’ll have copies of in the next Lame Excuse Books catalog, already in progress.

This includes two books I didn’t pick up when they came out because I already had the first hardback edition and didn’t feel a need to pick up a post-first limited. In the intervening years the, book market has changed quite a bit, and post-first limiteds have gotten a lot more common. Plus I already had just about everything else Joe published, so I’m rounding out my collection. And I got them at quite attractive prices.

  • Lansdale, Joe R. Act of Love. Cemetery Dance, 1992. First limited edition hardback (preceded by both the Leisure books PBO and the Kinnell UK hardback), #465 of 750 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket and a Fine slipcase. Bought off eBay for $36 (list price is $50).

  • Lansdale, Joe R. Hap and Leonard: Blood and Lemonade. Short Scary Tales (SST) Press, 2020. First hardback edition and first signed limited edition (preceded by the Tachyon trade paperback), #101 of 500 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. I’ll have copies of this available in the forthcoming Lame Excuse Books catalog.
  • Lansdale, Joe R. Jane Goes North. Subterranean Press, 2020. First edition hardback, #264 of 2,000 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Road trip novel. I’ll have copies of this too in the forthcoming Lame Excuse Books catalog.
  • Lansdale, Joe R. Of Mice and Minestrone. Tachyon, 2020. First edition trade paperback original, a Fine copy. “Hap and Leonard: The Early Years.” And yes, I’ll have copies of this as well in the forthcoming Lame Excuse Books catalog.
  • Lansdale, Joe R. Paradise Sky. Short Scary Tales (SST) Press, 2016. First UK edition and first limited edition hardback, a PC copy of 350 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket and decorated boards. Bought for $30 of eBay.

Library Addition: Two Joe R. Lansdale Firsts

    Friday, October 11th, 2019

Two books, one a small press signed/limited edition that I’ll have in the next Lame Excuse Books catalog, the other anthology I just missed picking up when it came out:

  • Lansdale, Joe R. The Big Book of Hap and Leonard. Short, Scary Tales Publications, 2019. First edition hardback, #101 of 400 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Collection of Hap and Leonard stories. Includes everything in the Tachyon Hap and Leonard trade paperback, plus several additional pieces. I’ve also laid the three SST stickers affixed to the tissue paper wrapping the book ships with, because that’s just the sort of hairball I am.

  • Lansdale, Joe R., editor. Crucified Dreams: Tales of Urban Horror. Tachyon Press, 2011. First edition trade paperback original, a Fine copy. Reprint anthology. Some good stories in here.
  • Library Additions: Three Signed Joe R. Lansdale Firsts

All three of these were bought from Joe R. His Ownself’s table at this year’s Armadillocon.

  • Lansdale, Joe R. The Elephant of Surprise. Mulholland Books, 2019. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, new and unread, inscribed to me by the author. Hap and Leonard novel.
  • Lansdale, Joe R. and Kasey Lansdale. Terror Is Our Business: Dana Roberts’ Casebook of Horrors. Cutting Block Books, 2018. First edition trade paperback original, a Fine copy, inscribed to me by Joe Lansdale.
  • (Lansdale, Joe R.) Jabcuga, Joshua, Todd Galusha, and Horacia Domingues. Joe R. Lansdale’s Bubba Ho-Tep and the Cosmic Blood-Suckers. IDW, 2019. Trade paperback original, a Fine copy, inscribed to me by Lansdale. Graphic novel adaptation of Lansdale’s Bubba and the Comic Blood-Suckers.

  • Library Additions: Several Joe R. Lansdale Firsts

    Saturday, December 22nd, 2018

Camelot Books had a “Stocking Stuffer Sale” where they offered 50% off if you bought $500 or more (pre-discount), and 60% off if you bought $2,000 or more. The challenge was that the books had to retail for $75 or less.

Naturally I rose to the challenge.

I ended up buying 41 books, some of which will show up in the next Lame Excuse Books catalog. This is the first of several posts documenting which books are going to into my own library. (I’ll take a break on Monday to document something else that came in.)

First up: Joe R. Lansdale. Note that I had most of these titles, but not these states of the title.

  • Lansdale, Joe R. A Fist Full of Stories (And Articles). Cemetery Dance, 1996. First edition hardback, 420 of 500 signed, limited copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket and a Fine slipcase. Supplements a trade copy and a traycased lettered copy. Bought for $26, marked down from $65.
  • Lansdale, Joe R. Coco Butternut. Subterranean Press, 2017. First edition hardback, 244 of 400 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Hap and Leonard novella. Supplements a trade copy. Bought for $18, marked down from $45.
  • Lansdale, Joe R. Honky Tonk Samurai. Gauntlet Press, 2017. First limited edition hardback, #60 of 500 signed, numbered copies. Supplements the Mulholland Books trade edition (which precedes). Bought for $24, marked down from $60.
  • Lansdale, Joe R, editor. The Horror Hall of Fame. Cemetery Dance, 2011. First edition hardback, one of 550 signed (by Lansdale) copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Bought for $26, marked down from $65.
  • Lansdale, Joe R., editor. The Horror Hall of Fame. Cemetery Dance, 2011. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Trade edition. Bought for $14, marked down from $35.
  • Lansdale, Joe R, editor. Retro Pulp Tales. Subterranean Press, 2006. First edition hardback, 129 of 250 numbered copies signed by all the contributors, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket and a Fine slipcase. Supplements a trade edition copy. Bought for $26, marked down from $65.
  • Finally, another Lansdale title came in during the same timeframe direct from the publisher:

  • Lansdale, Joe R, editor. Cosmic Interruptions. Short Scary Tales (SST) Publications, 2018. First edition hardback, #105 of 550 signed, numbered hardbacks, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. New short story collection from this UK publisher, weighing in at a hefty 528 pages. Also have copies for sale through Lame Excuse Books.
  • Library Additions: Lettered Edition of Joe Lansdale’s Hoodoo Harry

    Wednesday, January 17th, 2018

This is one of those books that almost eluded me, but I snagged what was evidently the last hardback copy:

  • Lansdale, Joe R. Hoodoo Harry. Mysterious Bookshop, 2016. First edition hardback (small trim size), letter T of 26 lettered copies (along with an additional 100 hardback numbered copies, not seen), a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, new and unread. “Bibliomysteries 33.” 72 page Hap & Leonard novella. Bought directly from the publisher for $100, since they were already out of the numbered edition.

    Included with the same purchase:

  • Lansdale, Joe R. Hoodoo Harry. Mysterious Bookshop, 2016. First edition trade paperback original, a Near Fine+ copy with bend to bottom outer tip (due to the way Mysterious Bookshop packaged things), otherwise new and unread. Presumably simultaneous with the hardback issue. Plus:
  • Lippman, Laura. Snowflake Time: A Christmas Story. Mysterious Bookshop, 2017. Center-stapled chapbook. Back cover reads “A holiday gift with the compliments of The Mysterious Bookshop.”
  • Not part of the bundle, but I might as well list it here:

  • Lansdale, Joe R. Bubba and the Cosmic Blood-Suckers. Subterranean Pres, 2017. First edition hardback, #580 of 1500 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, new and unread. Prequel (of a sort) to Bubba Ho-Tep. Elvis, Nixon, Colonel Parker, and cosmic horrors. What’s not to like?
  • Books Read: Joe R. Lansdale’s Vanilla Ride

    Monday, March 15th, 2010

    Joe R. Lansdale
    Vanilla Ride
    Random House, 2009, $24.95

It had been nearly a decade since the last Hap & Leonard novel, so it was good to catch up with them again. The last one, Captains Outrageous, occasionally suffered from having too many people on stage at the same time, which is why it was a good thing that Leonard’s boyfriend remained off-stage for this one. Hap and Leonard retrieve their old friend Marvin Hanson’s daughter from the clutches of a drug-dealer, only to have the Dixie Mafia come down on their heads. A pretty hefty body count ensues. I would rank this in about the middle of the Hap & Leonard novels, not as good as Mucho Mojo or The Two-Bear Mambo, but as good or better than the rest. (And just in case you didn’t know, I have a ton of Lansdale (most of it signed) over on the Lame Excuse Books page.)
