Library Addition: Poul Anderson’s The Broken Sword

Thursday, October 22nd, 2026

We interrupt the ongoing cataloging of The Mysterious Benefactor’s additions to my library to catalog some Poul Anderson firsts from the collection of Henry Morrison from Heritage Auctions.

Anderson, Poul. The Broken Sword. Abelard-Schuman, 1954. First edition hardback (no statement of printing on the copyright page, as per Currey), a Near Fine- copy with traces of an old-style black border dust jacket protector around the edges, a trace of wear at heel, and a trace of foxing to inside covers, in a Very Good dust jacket in an old style dust jacket protector, with wrinkling to front and rear cover (possibly due to application of the dust jacket), but the way the protector was applied doesn’t seem to have left residue on the dust jacket, as far as I can tell by lifting it up over the flaps. Currey, page 9. Cawthorn & Moorcock, Fantasy: The Hundred Best Books 80. Pringle, Modern Fantasy: The Hundred Best Novels 15. Magill, Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature, pages 173-177. Lusty Norse fantasy Moorcock has stated he prefers to The Lord of the Rings. I read it in my youth, but it didn’t make much of an impression then. Won as part of a ten book lot for just over $100 including buyer’s premium and shipping, some of which will be added to my library and some of which will be sold through Lame Excuse Books.
