About Lawrence Person

Lawrence Person is a science fiction writer living in Austin, Texas. His short fiction has appeared in Asimov's, Analog, Postscripts, Jim Baen's Universe, Fear, and several anthologies. He also edits the Hugo-nominated SF critical magazine Nova Express, and runs the Turkey City Writer's Workshop. His non-fiction has appeared in National Review, Reason, Whole Earth Review, The Freeman, The World & I, Science Fiction Eye, The New York Review of Science Fiction, and Slashdot.org. He owns such a large library (mostly science fiction first editions) he had to buy a two-story house to put it in, and then adopted a golden retriever to drag him out of his house on a regular basis. He also makes a mean batch of salsa.

Shoegazer Sunday: Tokyo Shoegazer’s “Back to My Place”

A while back I put up Tokyo Shoegazer’s “Bright.” Here’s “Back to My Place,” another long song, that starts off all ethereal but just after 2:30 in turns back into a soaring, reverb-drenched wall of shoegazer guitar goodness. Off their … Continue reading →

Shoegazer Sunday: Lemon Chair’s “Vividness”

I thought the previous dose of Japan’s Lemon’s Chair worked pretty well, so here they are with “Vividness.” The beginning and end are soft and noodly, but the center is jam-packed with magisterial sludge of rich, gooey Shoegaze goodness.

Happy Birthday Louis Armstrong

Today is the birthday of the greatest trumpeter, and one of the most distinctive vocalists, who ever lived, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, who would have been 111 today. He didn’t invent Dixieland Jazz, he only perfected it. I don’ see a … Continue reading →

Shoegazer Sunday: Lily of the Valley’s “IOK-1”

Here’s another obscure Japanese Shooegaze band, Lily of the Valley, with “IOK-1” performed live at the Apple store in Shibuya. I think the echoey acoustics of the place actually adds to the song’s charm. They hail from Sendai, which was … Continue reading →

Shoegazer Sunday: Dreamend’s “Magnesium Light”

I liked last week’s dose of Dreamend so much that I’ve been trolling through their various YouTube offerings, including this offering, which sounds less Shoegazer than some sort of demented bluegrass by way of Neutral Milk Hotel, with maybe a … Continue reading →

Shoegazer Sunday: Dreamend’s “New Zealand”

The long guitar intro to this song sounds so much like that from A Beautiful Machine that I had to check and make sure it wasn’t the same guy. No, the band consists of Ryan Graveface, who’s also the guitarist … Continue reading →

Off-Brand Mahler

Although I’m not completely ignorant of classical music, the work of Gustav Mahler isn’t something I’ve bumped into terribly much, despite assurances from my hardcore classical music loving friends (which is to say, Mike) that he is Teh Awesome. I’ve … Continue reading →
